Amadou + Mariam
Folila (Nonesuch, 2012)
Folila is the eagerly anticipated new studio album by one of Africa’s most famous musical couples, Amadou & Mariam. With this new recording, Marc-Antoine Moreau, the French producer of the Malian duo continues to seek the pop market. Moreau is Amadou & Mariam’s habitual producer and has made an album that seeks special attention in the French market with international and French guests such as Santigold, TV on the Radio, Nick Zinner, Bertrand Cantat, hip hop performer Theophilus London, and Malian sensation Bassekou Kouyate.
Although there is still a traditional Malian essence, Folila is intended for a wider audience, with part of the lyrics in French and an overpowering presence, in some of the songs, of former punk rocker Bertrand Cantat.
Folila is a vibrant album of African pop by one of Mali’s most beloved musical acts.
