Pipa Master and Composer Gao Hong’s Carnegie Hall Debut to Feature a Groundbreaking Trio and Regional Premieres

In her Carnegie Hall debut, Chinese pipa master and composer Gao Hong will feature a groundbreaking trio of pipa, sitar and tabla, regional premieres of her own compositions, and a handful of pure traditional Chinese pipa works from the expressive Pudong repertoire.

In a celebration of her 35th anniversary of playing the pipa, Gao Hong will be joined by Pandit Shubhendra Rao on sitar- a top disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar – rising young tabla star Biplab Bhattacharya, Indian vocalist and veena player Nirmala Rajasekar, Michelle Kinney on cello, percussionist David Hagedorn, and pianist Nicola Melville. Included in the program will be the rare regional premiere of an important traditional work lost for generations and recently reconstructed by Gao Hong’s late mentor, Pudong master Lin Shicheng.

“Gao Hong and Friends” will take place on Sunday, April 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Gao Hong is not only a world renowned pipa player, but a heralded composer as well, having been awarded commissions from the likes of the Jerome Foundation, American Composers Forum, Zeitgeist, Walker Art Center, Twin Cities Public Television and many others.

The concert will include Gao’s compositions for the unique pairing of pipa with sitar and tabla, her signature solo work “Flying Dragon,” as well as her heartfelt work for pipa and percussion, “Courage” – inspired by her daughter’s triumphant battle with
leukemia.
