Andy Palacio, one of the most critically acclaimed world music artists of the past year, passed away unexpectedly on January19th, 2008. On Friday, April, 25th and Saturday, April 26th, the Andy Palacio Tribute Concert performs at the Festival International de Louisiane.

For this special concert, the Garifuna Collective will be joined by members of Umalali: The Garifuna Women’s Project, whose CD, The Garifuna Women’s Project, was released by Cumbancha on March 18th. Other highlights include the energizing Aurelio Martinez from Honduras and Belize’s hottest young punta rock singer Lloyd Augustine.

Cut down in the prime of his career, Palacio had only recently achieved his lifelong goal of directing the global spotlight onto the remarkable music of the unique Afro-Amerindian Garifuna people of Central America, thanks in part to the success of Wátina, which was released by the record label Cumbancha in February 2007. Recorded with the Garifuna Collective, an all-star, multi-generational lineup of exceptional musicians, Wátina was widely applauded by the international media as one of the best world music albums of the year, if not of all time.

In the Garifuna community, the death of a loved one is an opportunity to celebrate their life with music and dance, and the Andy Palacio Tribute Concert has been organized to commemorate this tireless cultural activist. The Andy Palacio Tribute Concert features some of the brightest talents in the Garifuna music community in what will surely be a moving and memorable concert experience.
