Africa Calling, World Music Artists in Support of Live 8

Cornwall, UK – The Eden Project is staging a major world music concert in Cornwall (UK) on the 2nd of July under the banner of Africa Calling. It is one of the most important events to hit the UK this year. It will take place at the Eden Project throughout Saturday 2 July as part of the worldwide Live 8 celebrations.

Featuring superstars of the world music scene, the festival, along with the other Live 8 concerts, will raise awareness of the issues surrounding the upcoming G8 summit while introducing some of the world’s most talented musicians to an audience at an spectacular venue.

Africa Calling will be programmed and hosted in association with WOMAD and its co-founder, Peter Gabriel, who has championed World Music for the past 25 years; together with Johnny Kalsi, of the Dhol Foundation.

The concerts will be held on the stage in the Eden arena with the world’s biggest greenhouses providing a spectacular backdrop in the crater. This outstanding line-up will bring the spectacular Eden site alive with unbeatable African party spirit.

The artists scheduled to perform are:

Youssou N’Dour, Ayub Ogada, Tinariwen, Daara J, Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited, Mariza (who was born in Africa), Angelique Kidjo, Akim El Sikameya, Johnny Kalsi, Chartwell Dutiro, Geoffrey Oryema, Maryam Mursal, Rokia Traore, Shikisha, Siyaya, Emmanuel Jal, Frititi, Coco M’Basi, and Modou Diouf.

Managing Director Gaynor Coley said: ‘We are all excited at the prospect of our Eden here in Cornwall being the stage for the Live8 Africa Calling concert and the crew here is gearing up fast to deliver the biggest little concert in the history of the Westcountry.’

Live 8 will be celebrated July 6th, coinciding with the G8 summit in Scotland. The G8 meetings bring together 8 world leaders. They will be presented with a workable plan to double aid, drop the debt and make the trade laws fair. The intention is that these 8 men agree, in order to become the generation that made poverty history.
